Getting a new phone: how to move Google Authenticator

This is easiest while the old phone still works. Don’t factory reset the old phone first.

  1. Option 1: export. Google Authenticator has Transfer accounts → Export. The old phone shows a QR code and the new phone scans it.
  2. Option 2: switch in OKX. In the OKX app go to Profile → Security center → Authenticator app → Change, confirm with a code from the old phone, then link the new one.
  3. Check: only delete the entry on the old phone after the 6-digit code on the new phone logs you in to OKX.

After you change or reset your authenticator, OKX pauses withdrawals for 24 hours. That’s a safety feature, not a problem with your account.

Phone lost or wiped: reset 2FA from the login page

  1. Open the OKX app or website and enter your account and login password as usual.
  2. At the two-factor step, choose “Can’t verify” → “Reset”.
  3. Complete the identity check, usually a face scan that must match the person verified at sign-up.
  4. Once approved, link a new authenticator and write the new key on paper.

If self-service doesn’t work (for example, your details don’t match), contact OKX support from your registered email with your ID documents. Do all of this only in the OKX app, the official website or your registered email. Anyone who messages you offering to “unlink” your 2FA is a scammer.

Why you should write your authenticator key on paper

When you set up Google Authenticator, the page shows a QR code and a setup key of about 16 characters. With that key, any phone can generate the same 6-digit codes.

  • Write it on paper and keep it with your ID. Don’t screenshot it into your photo library, save it to a notes app or upload it to cloud storage.
  • Whoever has the key has your authenticator, so keep it to yourself and never show it to anyone.
  • Re-linking makes the old key useless, so update your paper copy.

Why can’t I withdraw for 24 hours after a reset?

When thieves get your password, the first thing they usually do is change your authenticator or phone number. After these sensitive changes OKX sets a protection period of about 24 hours that pauses withdrawals, P2P sales and other outgoing transfers, giving the real owner time to notice and freeze the account.

During that period you can still log in, view your assets and trade; the money just can’t leave. If you get a change notice you didn’t make, go straight to what to do if your OKX account is hacked.

What is an OKX passkey, and should you turn it on?

A passkey is a passwordless way to log in: you confirm with your phone’s fingerprint, face or screen lock. It is tied to the website’s domain, so a phishing site can’t capture or reuse it. That makes it more phishing-resistant than SMS codes or passwords.

My OKX authenticator code keeps saying it’s wrong. What now?

The most common cause is a wrong phone clock. Set your phone’s time to automatic, or sync time inside Google Authenticator, then try again. If it still fails, make sure you’re reading the OKX entry and not another site’s.

How long does resetting 2FA take?

If your documents are in order and the face check goes smoothly, self-service reset is usually quick; manual review takes longer. Follow what the page says and don’t submit twice.

I never verified my identity and lost my authenticator. What can I do?

Without verified details, it’s much harder for OKX to confirm you own the account. That’s why we recommend verifying right after sign-up. Contact support from your registered email and explain the situation.

Can I turn off Google Authenticator?

You can switch to another method, but turning 2FA off completely isn’t recommended. Your account would rely only on a password and SMS, which is much easier to steal.

Can I have the authenticator on two phones?

Yes. Add the same key on both phones and keep one as a backup. Both phones need a screen lock, and keep the backup somewhere safe.

What happens to my passkey if I lose my phone?

Passkeys usually sync with your Apple or Google account, so signing in to the same account on a new phone brings it back. If you’ve lost that account too, follow the authenticator reset steps.
